As nothing was received from running ubuntu-bug `pidof compiz` I think
that on crashing my network also was disabled. Also when choosing "keep"
instead of "upload" the tmp folder suggested was not created.
Further... If I log in at the start as Guest everything works as
expected.

Please try this instead; Next time the freeze happens:
1. Log into a VT (Ctrl+Alt+F1)
2. Run: ubuntu-bug `pidof compiz`
Then when the bug is reported you can restart with:
3. Run: sudo restart lightdm
4. Log in again

Before submitting the previous report I had tried your suggestion 3 times.
Today I changed to lightdm (I prefer gdm for appearance) and again restarted 3
times.
The results were as previously described.

On tty1 there were 10 tasks blocked for more than 120secs followed by:

/tmp/dstackscript2621:4 : Error in source command file

3. Run: sudo restart lightdm
