I should add, the problem also does not occur on the production install
of Hardy 8.04 on the same laptop, so the problem has been fixed some
time ago.

I've installed the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release (64-bit) on my HP
NX6125 laptop, and the problem does not occur anymore. The machine
shuts down with no problems.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.

I was mistaken with the kdm only assertion.
I have now found the issue to be driver related and only occurs when
using the fglrx driver. I assume this is related to the screen issues
when changing between X and console modes.

After a little further investigation, I have noticed that the shutdown error
only occurs when using kdm. It also hangs the machine whilst logging out
(rather than shutting down) whilst using kdm. If there are any further logs
I can provide in light of this, please advise.

Thanks for the personal response. �I have checked for updates and there are no
new ones outstanding since I last applied some. �Are there any log files that
I could provide that might be of any help? At a brief browse I have not
noticed anything untoward.
