That didn't work either.

When I open Alsamixer or gnome-volume-manager it says Audigy 2, but the sound
is going through the on-board card.
I will now try to disable the on-board soundcard in the BIOS and see if that
may trigger something.

Turning the on-board card of didnt work, but uninstalling alsa-base and
ubuntu-minimal and installing them again fixed it.
Well at least for now, I hope it won't stop working again.

Forgot to mention that I run Feisty Fawn (updated from a development
version)
I also found this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-
driver/+bug/81476 I don't know if its the same problem. He fixed it by
changing his asound.conf, but in my opinion this is so vital that it
should be
