I have decided to workaround the problem. I installed my old ATI Radeon card from my old (dead) PC. Then I installed the Zorin 6.1 distribution. I now have the correct screen resolution and full control of the screen i.e. in Displays you can see the make manufacturer of the screen and is switches

Same issue also: maximum resolution available is 1024x768 and should get 1080. Graphics card is a NVIDIA GT520. I have tried all version of the driver offered in software sources with the same results. The default nouveau drivers works at the expected 1080 resolution as do the NVIDIA drivers on
