Thanks. That's excellent. Now it's clear the problem is Unity redrawing
constantly.
While we are working to make Unity redraws more efficient, that's
probably not the main issue here. The main issue is more about what
might be causing Unity to redraw constantly.
Likely candidates you should
Also, the general slowness of OpenGL suggests there might be a problem
with your (experimental) graphics drivers. Please try using the
officially supported kernel version and Mesa packages instead. This bug
will remain incomplete until you confirm it's still a problem with the
supported kernel and
Oh, sorry. It's just the kernel that's non-standard. Please try the
supported kernel from 12.04.
I also just realized you're running 12.04. You should get a major
performance improvement if you upgrade to 12.10. Unfortunately the
improvements are so large and numerous that most of them can never
What is the kernel in 12.10?
I made a decision that I would so much want to have a stable system and
my previous experiences of frequent distribution upgrades have been not-
so-good. Many times I was hoping for a better stability all in vain.
I definedly can not run standard 12.04 ubuntu because
The 12.10 kernel is based on 3.6, however it is confusingly named
3.5.0-18-generic still.
It sounds like the root cause of the bug is Firefox and/or Skype forcing
redraws. This will incur some compiz CPU usage but will only trigger
Unity redraws (the most expensive part) if some part of those
I did not do anything special. The CPU just jumped up. I'll see, if the
problem persists and use the script again when the load is high. Sorry I
had to reboot...

Sorry, maybe that's not a good test. compizcpu.txt shows compiz almost
completely idle and not using any significant amount of CPU. At least
much less than 20%.
Is there any window or application where the problem is worse? You say
it gets better in a terminal... ?
If idle CPU is 10% what were
