The fix (described by @james-page above) is included in the current
development release of Ubuntu, 13.04 (Raring). @utlemming has confirmed
the fix for 12.04 and 12.10. @louis-bouchard is currently working on
getting this fix applied to 12.04 and 12.10 vi
