I suspect this is fixed now, If you have problems with Hardy alpha2 or
later, please reopen. In that case it's likely a bug in nv driver.

You may want to try setting HorizSync and VertRefresh on the liveCD
/etc/X11/xorg.conf to the exact settings that your monitor manual specifies
(and then restarting gdm) to see whether any new options become available...

Worked around update frequency troubles by modding my xorg.conf, this
isn't blocking my upgrade any more. Thanks!
Some questions remain though that you may want to look into:
* Removing the HorizSync and VertRefresh lines from the generated xorg.conf and
letting Xorg autodetect those values

Both requested files provided, setting to unconfirmed.
Default resolution for the live CD is [EMAIL PROTECTED], I have tried down
to 640x480 without getting any choice but 60Hz for refresh frequency.
