update-manager was hanging for me, but it was gksu too.
Doing a rm ~/.gksu-lock before running it solved the issue.
Could you verify you don't have that file before running gnomg-app-
install?

Sorry, I did not made myself clear.
If gnome-app-install hangs the next time, can you please open a terminal window
and run:
$ ps ax|grep sudo
and
$ ps ax|grep gksu
and let me know the output?
