I forgot to mention that I'm not actually using NetworkManager, but just
"/etc/network/interfaces" directly with a manual startup each time the
computer is turned on.

As outlined in the second half of

I found the problem, I changed the WPA Supplicant Driver under Wicd
preference to 'ndiswrapper' instead of the original 'wext', after
changing it back it works alright. But the usb wifi adapter need to be
disconnected and then reconnected again when I do a 'warm' restart. This
should prove that eve
