Interestingly... i'm running ubuntu 9.10 (kernel 2.6.31.15) on a 32bit
machine and this is, almost, no longer an issue... since, sometimes, it
still happens (about once a month or so...)

The slow down as a result of the PATA/SATA combination may be causing at least
some of the above mentioned problems.
This will probably only affect those with Intel chipsets.

If you don't have a cdrom in the drive, removing the cdrom and sr_mod modules
avoids the freezes too.

Hello, I'm new on launchpad. I write from Germany and use Kubuntu 7.10. I the
same problems as Phillip.
Absolutly no prolems with using PCLinuxOS Kernel 2.6.18 or Kubuntu Edgy 6.10 on
my system, but using Kubuntu Feisty Kernel 2.6.20 or Kubuntu Gutsy Kernel
2.6.22 show the problems above.

Maybe the following information help: I am now working with Kernel
2.6.17, the problem is not occuring there. Additionally, I flashed my
BIOS to a new version, but this only made the problem slightly worse. It
occurs more often now in my opinion, but that's difficult to tell as it
is not occuring r
