I will test upstream kernel when I get a chance, probably tomorrow. I
was running 3.5.0-19-generic, before the upgrade came through proposed
updates (through Update manager), and it was working fine, also rebooted
to that kernel when I started to get problems with -20 and running it
now without any

I'm having similar issues with -20 that don't happen with -19. The
problems only seem to happen when my laptop is running on battery power,
not when it's connected to an external power source. On top of the
crashes I'm also unable to shut down when on battery power. I have to
cut the power.

Also, did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there
a kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?
This will help determine if the problem you are seeing is the result of
the introduction of a regression, and when this regression was
introduced.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.7 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both
the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.
