I get same error. I tried to install UbuntuCE and Ubuntu 8.10 beta from
CD and USB. Same error.

My mistake... when I enable IO APIC, I don't even get to the install
stage... It gives me some other error:

I enabled IO APIC and tried to install Xubuntu from a desktop cd iso. It
STILL game me the same error of "swap #5" blah blah
Host:
winxp sp2
512 ram
Linux:
256 ram
32 mb graphics
10gb FIXED hdd
What else can I try??

Confirmed here too.
I received same error for swap #5. I tried a set-size vDisk and also a
expanding volume vDisk. Both no-go.
I ENABLED IO APIC option and it installed with no problems. After
install and pressed ENTER and the machine rebooted for the first time.
But each and every time i started
If I enable the IO APIC option for the used virtual machine option
VirtualBox, the bug does not happen.

The same error happens with Ubuntu desktop when run inside VirtualBox :
"Failed to create a swap space"
The creation of swap space in partition #5 of IDE1 master (hda) failed.
Details:
VirtualBox 1.3.8 running on Windows XP pro SP2
VM machine : 16 MB VRAM, 512 MB RAM, 2.3 GB disk, CD is mounted I
After CANCEL is selected, error message is:
"Failed to create a swap space."
