Mmmm, gents, I was looking at the last screenshot of my output
settings and had a hunch. I decided to move the output volume to about
75% and still had no sound. I moved it to about 80% and still no sound.
I moved it to 100% and bingo, there was sound! Why would there be no
sound at levels l

Dave: Re posts #s 8 and 9, thank you. I found five of the "required-
any" lines and commented out all five and did as you indicated in post
#9 (I even rebooted the laptop) but still no sound. I have attached a
screenprint of my sound output.

but the volume control are at pin complexes of cx20549 instead of audio
output (DAC)

Specifically: "For those of you who are missing a speaker port, edit
/usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output-speaker.conf and comment
out all lines that start with "required-any"."
