On log out or switch user, my screen often goes blank, with my monitor
displaying an error message as if it's being fed wrong resolution info.
Boot up is fine, happens only on log out and switch user.

I've not seen this with any of my test boxes (comprising -nv, -ati, and
-intel). My guess is that this is more likely to be an xorg issue than
a gnome issue. It sounds like a driver/hardware issue, except that
people are seeing it with a variety of drivers.

I finally resolved the crashing when switching users. In order to solve
the problem, I had to set up my 915resolution by moving my desired
resolution to the first MODE. Don't ask me why this is necessary, it
seems to be some kind of problem with 915 resolution. Read step 5 in

I can confirm this behavior.
I use a Dell Optiplex 745 with a 965Q graphics (with the i810 driver).
Switching to the console works, but switching back to the X server results in a
messed up display.
Under edgy the display would sometime blink and flicker with strange things
appearing when moving
I just found another way to cause this problem.
CTL+ALT+F1 switches to another virtual terminal. When I attempt to
return to the virtual terminal running the X server (normally
CTL+ALT+F7), the graphics crash in the same way as attempting to log
back in after doing a "switch user."

I cannot "Switch User". I get a blnk screen and there is only way to
