I'm booting off a brand new gutsy install, and a new motherboard (and
hence network card altogether). At first I thought this problem was not
occurring, but after the last few boots this share is again failing to
mount.

Thanks for taking the time to test with Gutsy. In regards to the
automounting of your shares you might want to change your /etc/fstab
from smbfs to cifs.
