Looks like this bug is much more reproducable when the application window is half-maximized (keyboard shortcut Ctrl-Alt-KP2 or Ctrl-Alt-KP8). Reproduces well with both gnome-terminal, firefox, thunderbird ... apparently any application. When I was playing around reproducing this bug's different
