I've changed package to gnome-control-center. Btw, could be good for you
read a document about alternatives or if you don't feel confortable on
CLI, can install "galternatives". That's a good point to start:

I've now assigned this to gnome-desktop as it sounds like blender isn't
doing anything wrong. If that's the case then I suppose that Ubuntu
needs to fix the configuration the gnome-desktop so the Ubuntu default
(firefox) is always the system default.

Oh. How webbrowser API works:
1) First check alternatives. If you have a valid browser linked at
/etc/alternatives/{gnome,x}-www-browser webbrowser API will use that
2) If the alternatives symlinks are wrong or doesn't exists, webbrowser API
gets web browser string from gconf data
(/desktop/gnom
Call order:
source/blender/python/api2_2x/Blender.c -> release/scripts/help_browser.py ->
/usr/lib/python2.5/webbrowser.py

Same behaviour in Ubuntu 7.10 Tribe 1.
With Epiphany installed it chooses that.
With Galeon _and_ Epiphany installed the manual doesn't open at all!
