If you "got the snd-ice1712 driver from ALSA as [you were] advised on
Ubuntuforum.org", you installed alsa-driver from upstream, which
overwrites Debian's/Ubuntu's equivalent files.

alsa-base and alsa-utils will not upgrade in Feisty
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109742
You received this bug
I haven't mixed any packages that I'm aware of. I got the snd-ice1712 driver
from ALSA as I was advised on Ubuntuforum.org. The alsa-utils is from the
repositories. I don't know enough to make changes to the default install. I
certainly wouldn't change the directories where the files installed.
I can't reproduce this symptom on a clean install of edgy dist-upgraded
to feisty. Ubuntu, like Debian, does not have an /etc/alsa/dev.d as you
noted. I'm closing this bug report, because no default install of edgy
will experience this symptom.
Did you mix and match alsa packages/source from anoth
I'm going to install a fresh copy of edgy then dist-upgrade to feisty to
attempt to verify this bug.
