I got the same behaviour as originally described. (Ubuntu 7.04; No 3d desktop)
Applications lose their min, max, close buttons and the title bar.
Desktop is not showing icons or responsive.
ALT-TAB doesn't work, only one application can have focus, and it covers the

I'm confused: has the source of the problem been fixed, or would anyone
who encounters it in the future be forced to use the same manual method
as WSW described above?

Just to clarify, I personally don't have the problem anymore, thanks to
the method described by WSW (see my comment at

after that one fix.

Try to re-start the desktop managerby pressingctrl + alt + backspace

These problems are probably due to Beryl as it seems a bit hard on systems try

I found a simple fix to the problem although I still don't know the cause of
the bug.
My simple fix is go to the hidden directory ~/.gnome2 and delete the corrupted
file ~/.gnome2/session.
After deleting the file, simply reboot the computer and the top/bottom panels
will re-appear.

I attached the bad session file that I deleted for someone to see why it caused
the panel problem in Feisty.
This session file was created, I believe, when I went to System - Preference
- Session and clicked on Save Current Session.
Right now I don't have confidence in using System - Preference

Thanks WSW, it worked!
Curiously, the file ~/.gnome2/session was not visible when I was in Safe
GNOME mode. Perhaps it's only generated after a regular login. I had to
log into a regular session first, to see this file. I also had to do
View Show Hidden Files in the Nautilus File Browser to see
I am also not using Beryl - just regular Feisty with GNOME and a few
additional Themes.

By I renamed it to ~/.gnome2/session.bak I meant to say I renamed the

Top and Bottom Screen Panels Stopped Working Properly in Ubuntu
I was trying to report a similar bug when I saw this one. I am having
the same problem with the top and bottom panels disappear when I open
any application. For example when I open an application, it will always
open from the upper left corner covering the top panel. If the
application uses
I also tried logging in using Failsafe GNOME mode and everything seems
to work fine. The top and bottom panels appears as normal.
However, if I log in using normal GNOME mode, the top and bottom panels
still disappear when I open an application.
Similar to Ohbother01, when I used Session
Another thing I just noticed is that Alt-F2 does not work.
Also, I cannot resize the window of an application. The minimize button
on the top right corner of an application also disappeared. In other
words, I cannot minimize an application.

Thanks for your quick response. Are you asking about re-adding the
Workplace Switcher applet, or the main pair of Panels?
I had tried to re-add the Workplace Switcher applet in regular mode, as
described above, but I did not see any results. So I tried again, with
zero results. In Safe GNOME
As above I am also having both panels dissapear and that leaves only a right
click option on the desktop.
If the right click option had a reset button or even a log out button I could
re-boot as it is I have to press the computer reset and re-boot.
I did not have this problem in Ubuntu 6.10.

A couple of additional problems:
Trying to add Workplace Switcher Applet to the bottom panel does nothing

The only way to close an application is using File Quit, again because
the window borders or frames are missing around applications.

The closed-source video driver is for ATI. I have a relatively new Dell
computer, so I think the ATI card is a recent one, and the current
driver is used (not the legacy one). I've tried to copy and paste the
version number, but i cannot paste it into this Firefox window.

Logging in using Failsafe GNOME mode seems to solve most of the
problems. I had to remove the extra Workplace Switcher applets from the
Bottom Panel, and then things seemed to be right back to normal.
