Just FYI I (the OP) have had the issue ever since I have reported it.
It seems I can never save the images properly aside from using drag-and-
drop to nautilus. Not even saving a 320x240 image from there works.
It's the weirdest thing.

Saved to the Desktop. Tried creating a new directory on the desktop
(aptly called "downloads") and saving it there. Still no dice. The
partition was whatever Ubuntu created when I did the format and install.
I let it format the entire hdd and do its thing.

I have found though if I use CTL-S instead of right clicking, it seems
to work fine. I g

I'm unable to reproduce that behavior; It worked for me:
~$ ls -ln *jpg
-rw-r--r-- 1 1000 1000 1177217 2007-04-25 10:36 01232_lazydaysii_2560x1600.jpg
