Same here. In Gnome, the initial naming of the workspaces was OK, but
further renaming of the newly initialized names is not possible. You
edit the name in "Preferences" and the change is simply ignored.

Further information.
When I move a window to another workspace, the list of workspaces DOES
show the workspace names so the information is definitely there and
correct but the panel icons for the workspaces are not picking them up.
