The multiplexer daemon is generally considered the right approach. Media
players use parts of mtp that don't apply to gvfs so it's not a
candidate to serve as the multiplexer. But this is a bunch of work and
isn't going to happen soon.

This has always been a problem. You can't have two MTP clients talking
to one device at the same time. Rhythmbox tries to talk directly at the
same time as gvfs and two stomp on each other. It was hard to notice
before because gvfs would simply fail to connect at all using the
gphoto2 backend, and
