Why changing the default app for the "text/x-matlab" type, which
ordinarily carry the ".m" extension, puts the system in such a situation
that it can no longer deal with it?
After the change, what is now causing the conflict between the "text/x-matlab"
mimetype and its standard ".m" extension?

Confirmed, the bug is slightly tricky. Nautilus display a warning when
the filename and detected type don't match and they are not opened by
the same application. Changing the matlab default creates a dismatch
between text/x-objcsrc which still use gedit and text/x-matlab. A
workaround would be to

0. write a simple M file like the following "test.m"

1. double click on it, gedit should regularly open it. (<-- this is very
important). Then close gedit.

Could you describe easy steps to trigger the bug. You might want to
unset the gconf key /apps/nautilus/preferences/display_mimetype_warning
as a workaround

This bug is really a pain in the neck. It's years that it disturbs my
Matlab/Octave programming, and I am considering to switch back to KDE.
I can add one bit of information (valid on recent ubuntu releases, up to
7.04).
1) After a fresh GNU-Linux installation, Nautilus correctly opened xxx.m fil
not a duplicate, tha's an example of buggy mimetype detection which
should be fixed
