Pascal,
OK, I ran the dpkg-reconfigure. I am sorry to report that nothing seems
to have changed. The entire printed image is shifted towards the top,
often times cutting off part of the first printed line. Page size is
still being reported as 8.0x10.21in.
Again, thanks for your time.

Till,
Sorry for the long time responding.
I installed python-qt3 this evening and followed the hp-setup. Yes, it
worked, with one problem.
I am using a DeskJet 610CL with standard US letter (8 1/2 x 11 in)
paper. hp-toolbox HP Device Manager is showing letter for paper
size on the Print

The add printer wizard of the GNOME CUPS manager is also able to set up
printers which wer not auto-detected. Select Use another printer by
specifying a port: on the first page of the wizard near the bottom.
There choose LPT #1 in the drop-down list. On the second page choose
your printer model
Note that if the printer was turned on only after booting that then the
printer model cannot be auto-detected by most printer setup tools, as
the real printer auto-detection happens when the kernel modules are
loaded. Only printerdrake reloads the kernel modules when starting its
add printer
Till,
Thanks for your time. Sure enough printer is detected when it is on at
the time the computer is booted. I will look into upgrading to HPLIP.

refused: api/hplip_api.c 721
May 5 15:53:32 localhost hp: unable to send ProbeDevices: Broken pipe
Hope that helps.
