yes, install eclipse direct from eclipse.org, dont use the eclipse that
comes with Ubuntu.
The problem is that eclipse who comes with ubuntu comes with GCJ java, GCJ
is only in 1.4 version so it dont supports Junit 4, because of that ubuntu
simply rip it off. THe best thing to do is just install
That explanation is good, thank you.
However, I could not get the eclipse-gcj to work, so I just installed eclipse.
It seems to me that it would not use GCJ, but instead use any other JRE.
Wouldn't JUnit4 then work, since I use sun-java6?

hmm thats odd, here it used to come with GCJ working. You are installing
eclipse with synaptic?

Is there any way of resolving this problem? Why is JUnit4 disabled, and
pretty much broken, in Ubuntu? The version of JUnit that comes with
Ubuntu's Eclipse, version 3.8.1, is from 2002, 5 years ago. Why won't
Ubuntu allow the use of a newer version?
I have tried to copy the JUnit installation
I would like to point out that the dependence of subclipse (subversion
support for eclipse) on Junit4 additionally aggravates this issue. I.e.
it is essentially impossible to use subversion with the packaged version
eclipse.

Confirmed for myself as well. I get the same stack trace R Volgers lists above.
Here's my Eclipse session environment:
eclipse.buildId=M20070212-1330
java.version=1.5.0_09
java.vendor=Sun Microsystems Inc.
BootLoader constants: OS=linux, ARCH=x86, WS=gtk, NL=en_US
Command-line arguments: -os
I can also confirm this bug. Although with Eclipse Europa nearing
release, I'll probably do a manual install anyway.

I have the same problem. I understand JUnit 4 support is disabled in the
Edgy packages, but the fact that none of the obvious workarounds seem to
work (see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=343029) means this is
a serious problem. You should not have to manually install all of
eclipse just
My apologies, I should have added more information. Here is the
stacktrace for the error described in the bug report:
java.lang.NullPointerException

org.eclipse.jdt.internal.junit.launcher.ClasspathLocalizer.localURL(JUnitLaunchConfiguration.java:188)

i agree with you, the problem is to have to install all of eclipse just
to get Junit 4 working, great thing that Junit 4 dont work with GCJ, you
still MUST have the option to use it with Sun Java or at least the
option of installing it without having to install all of eclipse to
make it work

here is a SS o the problem
