Is this still a problem in Ubuntu gutsy 7.10, or in a recent hardy alpha

I have the same problem!
When playing sounds (any sound), the sound stops playing and any program
using it either locks-up or behaves abnormally.
I managed to once play up to 33 seconds of an audio CD...but that's the
most.
When pressing the test sound after this happens, I hear nothing. It
When I use only OSS I get a problem with youtube videos in Firefox: I no
longer have sound, which is not very fine ...
How to solve this ??

After running for a few days this looks to perhaps be related to the
other bugs of artsd CPU overload, crashing. I have disabled artsd and
told my apps to use straight OSS and this seems to help. xmms
particularly still has issues though. I'm thinking something in ALSA
perhaps ? This machine

It seems that both mplayer and xmms lock up 23 seconds into playing
media.
