I tested the v3.8.2 kernel after a full upgrade of all installed
packages. The issue does no longer occur. I can boot, log into Ubuntu,
and lsmod shows that ivtv is loaded:
erwin@armadillo:~$ lsmod | grep ivtv
ivtv_alsa 13768 1
snd_pcm 102477 5
snd_usb_audio,snd_hda_
Can you test the v3.8.2 kernel:

It turns out with the custom kernel nouveau doesn't work well but the
system then loads llvmpipe which works somewhat sluggish but it doesn't
crash.

I built a new kernel following the instructions in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/GitKernelBuild to the point. So, the .config
file is now different. I start with the file "config-3.8.0-7-generic" and do the
"yes '' | make oldconfig"
line. The resulting custom kernel boots up even with ivtv e
