OK.  I've raised this upstream as
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=481620.

I think I understand the problem now:

NetworkManager expects the server you are connecting to to be behind your
default gateway, so when it creates a default route over the server, it
creates a host route to that machine, via the GW.

However, if the server is ON your local network, then it creates a route
incorrectly via your gateway.

Is this a correct summary?
