Problem solved itself. I realised I had installed VirtualBox, but system
crashed during installation of this package. After three restarts of system I
ran 'apt-get update' and I got no error message. The only one thing I had to do
was reinstall VirtualBox.

Hi,
I also have the same problem. I tried twice to run 'dpkg --configure -a'. It
successfully finished, but problem was not solved. If I try to run apt-get or
synaptic, it writes the same message.
I use Kubuntu Feisty, I installed it 2 days ago on my new laptop, I installed
common packages like

Thank you for your report. Have you tried to run the command "dpkg
--configure -a" as advised ? Please run it, then tell us if the
applications still crash.
It would also be better, if you could give some details : have you
installed something special recently? etc...
