I had this problem on UBUNTU 13.04 on a Dell laptop (Dell latitude 5430)
I did a simple thing - just a lucky shot - .. updated all the xserver
packages that I had as follows:
sudo apt-get install xserver

"i915.semaphores=0" workaround did not change anything (even worse..)
BUT reverting to kernel 3.5.0-25 did it...
btw with 3.5.0-27 the problem is the same.
So for now i stick to 3.5.0-25.

Going to try "i915.semaphores=0" workaround.

You are hitting a GPU hang. The corruption you see as well as the
freezes but the pointer still active are all symptoms of the GPU the
system is detecting and trying to report.
