Interestingly there might be two separate issues here.
Last night I pulled the laptop out of the dock while running and got visible
corruption. Restarting compiz/unity had _no_ effect.
I restarted the machine and then much later I docked the laptop while running
and got the usual corruption. How

It happened to me when I plugged the external monitor into my (intel
graphics) laptop, or it might have been when I removed it, not entirely
certain. I unplugged the external monitor and plugged it back in a
couple of times (waiting for it to settle each time) and it recovered.

This happened again last night. I switched to a tty and restarted unity
& compiz and the effect was still there leading me to believe it's not a
unity or compiz problem but that the video driver was wedged.
