I hope I followed your instructions exactly. I tried the sequence three
times. However on the last step I get the following:
max@max-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get update
E: Malformed line 46 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse)
E: The list of sources could not be read.
max@max-desktop:
This is not really a bug. Converting to question to then bring to
completion.

OK, I see the issue. If you are comfortable with the terminal we can
correct this.
In the terminal enter:
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
Once the file has opened find the line you pasted back to me. Using the
arrow keys and editing the line. Change it to look like the line below.
deb h
Hello
After entering "cat /etc/apt/sources.list | sed -n '46p'" and hitting
I received the following:
deb http://archive.canonical.com/precise partner
which I copied and pasted in your email below.
