OK I'm changing this because in actual fact my laptop was just overheating.
however there is still a bug where video stops, audio continues and eventually
video returns.
turn off compiz or beryl and all works without err.

How do you know it's doing a loop and not blocking? Could you try to
obtain a backtrace http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash when
hanging and attach the file to the bug report?
