I am having the exact same problem with Ubuntu 8.04 (latest update). Totem won't recognize any form of DVD reporting an error saying the file can't be open. That it is either not a supported format or I don't have "permission to access". -- Plays CD, but won't play DVD https://bugs.launchpad.net/
