after i tried unsuccessfully to install my seagate hard drive...tried to

This is intentional. When you are asked for a password when running
dpkg-reconfigure, your password is displayed, so that you can safely
enter it, even if somebody is looking over your shoulder. Try entering
it and pressing enter.
