Public bug reported:

Hi,
I've an old, but good, Philips ToUcam PCVC 720k/20.
The cam is correctly detected from the udev-hotplug system and the device file
/dev/video1 (cause I've also a TV card in /dev/video0) is correctly created.
The problem is that when I try to access with grabbing application or to
enumerate it the system does not recognize it.
The syslog say that "no decompression module found" and as I read on the
official manteiner of the module, a decompression auxiliary module is needed
that is called ov511-decomp, this aside the device module that is the ov511.
I tried to look in /lib/modules without found it even if it has to be present
in the official kernel distribution.
So I decided to get and recompile the module from the source of the manteiner,
downloadable from http://alpha.dyndns.org/ov511/ event the latest release is
dated 2006/04/06.
Trying to compile it I discovered that the tarball sources are not compatible
with latest header of the feisty kernel (2.6.20) in which some syscall are
moved on other .h files.
Discovering that the support has been included ni the kernel official release I
tried to download the ubuntu-patched kernel sources and I've found the ov511
sources in the ubuntu customized subdir.
Launching make xconfig on kernel sources root I was able to see that the
ov511-decom (and also ov518-decom) is not default marked on so I've decided to
recompile them with sucesssful.
Modprobing the ov511-decomp ( as I did in my previous installation of linux ) I
was not able to use the cam even the loading has finished sucessfully. I've got
the same error on syslog "no decmpression module found".
So I've decided to try the ov518-decomp module instead (I'm an hacker !!! I'M
JOCKING :-D) and finally the can became usable (in sense that I can access to
the device ) BUT with strange green color in whole image with the weak shape of
my face in this blinding green frame.
I deducted that ov518-decomp module works as dempressor while ov511-decomp
doesn't.
I tryed the to look on the repository for the prebuilt version of module but
without any useful result.

Could you compile, test and nisert the decompression modules in the repository ?
Do I have to try with some module options, I hacked the comrpession option on
ovXXX and also on PWC but without results.
PS: PWC module is not the correct one, it didn't recognize the camera as ov511
did.
PPS: the chipset ov511 is also used on other camera vendors but the
decompression module is not ever required. Check on google to more infos...

Let me know something about, even to my personal email.

Regards

Alessandro
