I am both the upstream author of lwatch and also maintainer of Debian package.
I suspect the behavior you reported has other cause than lwatch error.
Could you, please run lwatch as:
sudo strace -o /tmp/lwatch.strace lwatch
wait for hangup then attach the file /tmp/lwatch.strace to the bugr
