Agreed with denixx: an instantaneous (and space-preserving) bar graph
per core, plus a combined graph of CPU load history (i.e. what we have
now) would be the ideal approach to display all relevant information in
a compact way.

What I really love to see is an overall graph for cpu and present values per
core.

It shows the configuration dialog for the gnome-shell system monitor
extension, which has a checkbox "Display Individual Cores".
When this is ticked, you can see that the CPU graphs in the panel (at top) are
now one per core. In the screenshot you can see the 2
