This occurs on every kernel upgrade - try going to the System menu
point, choose Restricted drivers Manager, then enable the restricted
driver - either choose the driver on your disk if you have it or choose
to download it from the net.

Hi everyone,
This bug was opened a while ago but there hasn't been any recent
activity. We're just curious if this is still an issue with the the
Hardy Heron 8.04 Alpha series which is currently under development and
contains an updated version of the kernel. It would be helpful if you
could test
I still have to download the test version, but when I upgraded to v7.10
the restricted driver manager told me that the driver needed for my
wireless is restricted. After installing it it works just fine. I have
had multiple kernel changes and because of the new driver it works all
fine. I think
Same problem here running Kubuntu on a Toshiba a100-912.
The light on my wireless adapter is switched on but network manager can't see
any wireless connection.
Output to uname -a is Linux toshi 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Sun Sep 23

Had the same problem with Ubuntu Feisty Fawn...apparently it's got
something to do with a new device driver that's included along with the
Kernel upgrade. A driver called b43.
What I did, to a fresh and UNUPDATED install of Ubuntu Feisty Fawn, is I
blacklisted the typical bcm43xx Broadcom
So yah...it's probably some extra drivers that are being added with the
Kernel upgrade that are causing these sorts of problems.

I had the same problem. I installed the restricted modules and it broke
my nvidia driver, but wireless worked. I copied out
ipw3945d-2.6.20-16-generic to my home directory and then uninstalled the
restricted modules package. I then copied ipw3945d-2.6.20-16-generic
back to /sbin and everything

Same problem here when upgrading from 2.6.20-15 to 2.6.20-16. I've got a
Dell D820 with a Core 2 Duo and a ipw3945 card. On top of that, I also
lose sound (intel-hda soundcard). Don't know what happened to this
kernel, but it's definitely pretty bad.

How did you install it?
I also tried many times, but it didn't work!
The installer gave my an error massage which tells you this:
NVidia can't find the kernel info, NVidia will look on the FTP
I have a similar problem, but ubuntu does recognise my wireless
connection.

After fixing the problem like you describe here, i have problems with my
nvidia driver. I install it manually (version 1.0-9639). Now i get a
version missmatch. Don't know what to do.

And then it just shut off! :(
Hi,
perhaps you habe to install the driver this way
sudo sh NVIDIA-*VERSION* --kernel-source-path=/usr/src/linux-
headers-uname r
uname -r tells you the kernel version. you have to execute it before you
run the installation and copy the result od uname -r into the clipboard
and paste it where

Well, after reading the latest in this thread, I tried what Paul and
Adam above did. It didn't work for me, but... something else worked: I
uninstalled all linux generic packages (sifted through synaptic) and
instead i installed their corresponding 386 cousins. All in the same
transaction... And,
I am able to confirm what Adam Ambrose said. On my machine - the
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16-generic - module was not installed.
I removed my symlink (see above - I had a symbolic link to fix my wireless
access) and installed the restricted module. There is now a
I'm curious if this issue isn't related, or even the same as, issue
117366 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/117366), in that the
proper restricted-modules package was *not* upgraded from -15 to -16.
This was the case with me, and once I manually did 'sudo apt-get install
Same problem. Macbook Pro. Core Duo. I can't even see that I have a
wireless card in network admin. Good luck.

Just thought that I'd confirm that I've had the same problem since kernel

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ uname -a
Linux aziz 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Wed May 23 01:46:23 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

comment above
Based on the nature of the bug and the apparent incidence rate, I'm
bumping this up to high importance.

I'm glad this bug has been confirmed.
I have a wireless card D-Link AirPlus DWL-650+ which has been working ever
since Dapper until now in Feisty. Needless to say that this kernel upgrade
broke it. The computer is a Dell laptop, Inspiron 5100.
I hope it doesn't hurt if I attach the same files
...and here's the second file...
