The same thing happen to me when Kubuntu upgraded from 2.6.20-15 to 2.6.20-16. I discovered what the problem was - it seems that a new version of the ipw3945d-* executable was not installed in /sbin during the kernel upgrade. The new kernel was looking for ipw3945d-2.6.20-16-generic but only ip

In Ubuntu Feisty I have encountered exactly the same with the upgrade from 2.6.20-15-generic to 2.6.20-16 generic. I have a Dell Latitude D620 and also my network adapter light has stopped burning. If more information is required, please let me know. Please find below the (partial) output of "su
