Public bug reported:

I thought I configured the file so I'd get 5.1 sound, but I see only two
'bars' listed in the alsamixer, so assume it is only making it to two
speakers - they both seem to be going to the base, so I can't hear voice
hardly and music not at all. Please help! Thanks. Ubuntu 12.04 and the
problem has been continuous since upgrading from 11.04 via 11.10 - it
has changed [variations on bad] as I try different things...but as it
never gets good, I'm lost. I just pulled out one physically removable
sound card to see if that would simplify the solution...I don't see any
change yet. One other thing. In the system tools there is something
called change the default sound card. When I click on it NOTHING EVER
HAPPENS. I think these are connected, but don't know how to re-install
that specifically. Have several times re-installed all sound related
files, but it seems to configure itself the same each time.
