I'm now confused. I removed gdesklets from my Sessions > startup list,
but left it installed on my system so it wouldn't load on startup, so
that if there were any updates to it, I would see them. I rebooted

I just started having problems with gdesklets after restarting my system today.
It worked right after the Feisty to Gutsy upgrade. My .xsessions-error log
shows the following python error:

when I try to open a display I get the above error. Apparently opening
a display is killing the daemon with the following info:
/usr/local/lib/gdesklets/utils/ErrorFormatter.py:118: Warning: invalid
unclass

This will presumably fixed in 0.36 which should be ready this fall. As
Christian said, this is probably related to GTK 2.12.

This is a known problem. I'll try to work on a fix. Maybe something's
changed in (py)gtk. But I have to see and don't have a clue at the
moment.

When installing in Gutsy Tribe1 via Synaptic, verbose mode warns that
there will be memory leakage. Otherwise, the bug is exactly as Matt
Phillmon describes.
