I also have the Dell XPS 18 touch screen all-in-one type computer. Because Windows 8 is on the computer, and no way to re-install it (MS does not provide), I can only boot directly to Ubuntu 13.04 from the LiveDVD written to USB, which I have done successfully. However Ubuntu is not providing

One quick addition to me previous post - the BIOS update website given in a previous post, says the latest BIOS is A05 7/8/2013 while on my XPS 18, dmidecode says A05 06/04/2013 I downloaded the one dated 7/8/2013 and ran it, but as I suspected, the installer says my computer with BIOS A05

Scott Pause, as per http://ftp.dell.com/published/Pages/xps-18-1810.html an update is available for your BIOS (A05). If you update to this, does it change anything? If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command: sudo dmidecode -s
