The problem is the keybinding plugin (which exists as a debian/patch).
It steps a glib main loop on it's own, despite the fact that the glib
plugin should do this.

I think this is releated to the new glib plugin:
$ compiz --replace
GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is not available with direct rendering.
GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is available with indirect rendering.

I have seen this here too, it seems to be less easily triggered if the
"wobble" pugin is disabled.

I have a feeling you've got obsolete plugins installed somewhere that
compiz is trying to load. It really shouldn't crash on this but see if
removing ~/.compiz/plugins helps.

I've run into this bug. I also have a problem where compiz doesn't want
to show anything on the screen. All I get is a brown background. I'm
not sure of its related.

I can confirm this with a Feisty backport here. Even the Magic SysRq
keys don't work.
I'm using Compiz on top of the proprietary NVIDIA driver (version
1:1.0.9631+2.6.20.5-16.28).
