I can't confirm the above fix because I gave up and bought a mac. There
were too many other problems with my ubuntu installation to even list.

I was seeing the same behavior described above, but I had added the
following to In /etc/default/locale:
LC_ALL=C
I have since removed this setting, and now indicator-datetime is
functioning normally for me.
