That was it. glxinfo shows direct rendering working along with glxgears
and gl screensavers running as expected.

better. I have the same graphics controller and my Gutsy install does
have the '/usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so' file. It seems that is is provided
by the libgl1-mesa-dri package. Do you have that package installed and
if so which
