the latest development release of Ubu
Could it be that you have a motherboard based on SiS662 chipset? (Like
D201GLY)
Xorg driver has a known problem with this chipset. It will show noise
(vertical lines, snow, etc.) then working in high resolution modes (like
1024x768 and 1280x1024). See this thread:

I'm not sure that this is actually a duplicate of bug #3731 . I've used
sis cards before and they put out some very strange default modelines.
Things like the framebuffer will fail on LCD monitors due to "quirky"
