Public bug reported:

I downloaded skype and while it was going through the unpacking and
installation process, i tried to open realplayer which I had installed
earlier and was working perfect, all of a sudden the Skype installation
gave me error messege saying that the installation encountered a
problem and it did not go through. I opened update manager. I t also
gave me error messege saying that the software index is broken and gave
instruction on how to fix it. I followed the instruction step by step
and that didn't solve the problem. Npw I can't do update, I can't use
synptic manager to install or uninstall programs, basically I am stuck
and I really don't know what to do to fix this problem.
