In general, most of these issues are caused either by bad h/v rates specified in xorg.conf (which are no longer necessary anyway), or else by invalid monitor EDID data. Each of you seeing this issue, first try regenerating your xorg.conf - run sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. For most people

It seems that this issue is not completely solved: I've just executed a liveCD session of kubuntu desktop KDE4 8.04 (final) in my laptop and the problem is still present. Tomorrow I'll test the KDE3 kubuntu and ubuntu versions, but probably it will also happen. Should this bug report be reopened,
