I have not used any PPA for Unity, and I got the same problem after
upgrading to 13.10. I did not have unity-lens-friends installed and I
just get a completely blank content are in the dash. I tried removing
(and reinstalling) all unity-lens-* packages but so far, no luck.

It's likely that using the Unity daily PPA will result in similar
problems. People are strongly advised to avoid using the daily PPA for
this reason.
